The Best Chocolate Chip Cookies – with a little elbow grease!

Since being conscious about being green is pretty new to me I wanted to try implementing some energy saving cooking techniques to a simple recipe.  So I am sharing my favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe with some tips on how i made them and saved some energy while doing it! First, I made sure to only open my refrigerator once while getting out my ingredients. Mis en place is a great tool to use in the kitchen and it saves energy from escaping from the fridge. Next I creamed the butter and sugar by hand with a wooden spoon.

Yes, it took a long time to get it to that creamy texture but it was a great arm work out, and made me feel less bad about skipping my gym trip to make cookies. These cookies came out amazing! (See the pics below) These little tips can be used in all types of cooking. Utilize them in your kitchen and sit back and relax and enjoy the food you’ve made knowing that you did your part. Ahhh saving the world is sweet one cookie at a time!

Ingredients

1 cup butter, softened
1 cup white sugar
1 cup packed brown sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons hot water
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Cream together the butter, white sugar, and brown sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. Dissolve baking soda in hot water. Add to batter along with salt. Stir in flour, chocolate chips, and nuts. Drop by large spoonfuls onto ungreased pans.

It’s Not Easy Making It Green – Mini Matcha Cupcakes

Since my blog is about being “green” in the kitchen. I wanted to make something that actually was green. At the supermarket as I was about to grab that little bottle of green dye I knew i wanted to make them naturally green. I had heard the horrors of the use of synthetic dyes, the study that showed that there could be a link to ADD in children, so I found another way. The answer was MATCHA. Matcha is a fine green tea that can be used in a lot of different ways in the kitchen.

A Sweet Mission!

Living in the city we all have been bombarded with the importance of living a green lifestyle. I never really thought that I was ever causing any environmental damage. I take the subway, I can’t afford to leave lights on my apartment, and I use canvas bags to go to the grocery store. Then I learned that when using my oven, only 6% of the energy used goes to cooking food – that means 94% is hot air waste. This got me thinking about ways to be greener in the kitchen and how to reduce my carbon foot print. I hope to use this blog to share my journey in making my baking practices better for the environment, and hopefully save a penny or two doing it. Each week I will post a new recipe with some information about some of the environmental concerns present in the food or materials I used to create the delicious treats. I hope to learn and share information on living a greener sweeter life.
